My relationship with Procrastination

my experience improving myself from procrastination

I was an expert procrastinator. And I just realized this or became like that in 2020 in a pandemic. Where I like to plan things, but I also like to procrastinate. Impressive, right?

Last year, I really blamed myself, why and how I “healed myself”, because every day this “disease” is getting worse. And in the end I realized that I had no motivation behind all of this. I feel I plan a lot of things because I have to do them, without knowing why I’m doing these things. For example, I postpone exercising because I don’t have strong motivation to do that, I just think exercise is good for me and everyone else, without me knowing that exercise can make me healthier, my digestion can be better, my metabolism can be better, and so on.

But, in the end I found the best way for me to fix this. I did a lot of things to create my “system”, with a lot of trial and error “what’s best for me”. Remember, I’m not an expert on this, but this kind of thing works on Me, and maybe it can work on you as well. Can I share it with you? Ha ha

  • Set your “Goals”, Start with “what”, what do you want to achieve? Operate it with the “how”. For example, “I want to be healthy and lose my weight”, Then you can start with “how do I lose my weight?”. You break down easy things you can do to lose your weight. For me, I walk 10,000 steps every day, because I think it’s easy and doesn’t surprise my body to begin. However, in the future I plan to train my muscles by going to the gym too haha. Remember, From the book of “Atomic Habit” James Clear said “Small progress matters instead of doing nothing”.
  • Create your “System”, Why? To simplify things you have to do over and over again. How? For me, you can start with small things like putting a book on the bed so I remember to read some pages of a book before sleep, making columns in excel that make it easier for me to record my daily financial statements. With this way, I feel everything is easier, and I finish my plans without burdening myself.
  • Just “Do it”, I think I don’t need to go into more detail about this. Do it when it needs to be done. If you keep putting off all your plans, maybe you don’t have the motivation to do it. For me, I always thought to “okay, I’ll do this only for 5 minutes first”, without realizing, I had completed 1 of my plans that day, and it made me feel satisfied and happy. Maybe, People call it pomodoro or something, but I call it “Just do it”.

On top of that, I also always remind myself, I can have many plans, but being unproductive is not a bad thing either, I don’t want to feel too guilty when I’m not productive. I try to convert the motivation from what I do into a positive habit for me, so I don’t call it “productive” but “habit”.
